Benefits formula driven material?

Hello! 

I am setting up the new foundation and going through everything. I came across formula driven material and never have understood it. The KB articles explain what it is, and how to edit/add but not when is the best to use them. 

Is it strictly just to set up in the project properties for project specific? Do you still need specs groups? I am a little confused.

We make our cabinets pretty much the same on every job other than changing door types/material. Is it worth it for me to set up/figure out?
