CutParts File & Formula Materials

I've been trying to make some updates to our formula generated materials and just made a pretty big mistake due to not understanding how the CutParts file worked.

In the library template, I made a copy of the CutParts file and started to edit the formula materials there, thinking I was only making changes to the copied CutParts file. I didn't realize the changes I made would also effect the other cutparts file. I made all the changes I wanted to test, then had to manually revert them when I realized I broke our formula materials for live projects.

How does the library CutParts file work exactly? Is it that the SheetStockLibrary, SolidStockLibrary, and BuyoutLibrary sheets are synced between all CutParts workbooks, but the CutParts, Prompts, and LookUpTable sheets are unique?

Do I need to create brand new formula materials to test these changes in the library template? Or is there a better way I could do this?
And if I create brand new formula materials, if I change the material pointers in the CutParts file, will those changes will be unique to the individual cutparts file?
Is there anything else I should be aware of?

Thanks!
