Is there a way to have a text field prompt reset back to a formula?

For example if I have a formula set to X=M!Upper_Door_Thickness and visible as a text field, but allow the user to override this value when a checkbox is checked, then when the checkbox is unchecked the formula is written to X again? Setting a conditional for the value would not work after the user overrides the value.
