How to know the correct placement for machining when using 2D Part Editor

We had a question come up in our product review meeting about the best way to determine where to place a machining operation when using 2D part editor.
It can be confusing to know how a part is orientated when seeing it in 2D compared to how it looks in the 3D environment.
