Importing projects BIG PROBLEM

BIG PROBLEM with importing projects.

I have been backing up projects weekly. I decided to import one of the backups so I could retrieve some products that were ruined.
After I imported the project which had been renamed, My project level materials in the original project were over written (deleted).
Also other unexpected things have happened in the original project.
*The original project should not have been touched.*

The project level materials exist in my backups but there is no way to export them out. This feature needs work.

UPDATE- MV Techs are working on this for me. All project level materials and hardware have disappeared from the user interface only. Fortunately everything is still in the workbooks. 

Are there many people out there exporting and importing back ups of projects and not having any issues?
