Optimization Discussion

I've had the opportunity to tour a facility that builds lawn mowers on a large scale, it was pretty amazing the amount of technology that was being used in all areas.  I spent a lot of time where the parts were being cut from 7, 10 and 11 gauge steel all with lazer's. What was amazing was the extent of optimization, they calculate the efficiency by the difference between the weight of the parts vs the weight of material purchased.  Makes sense.  So granted the lazer has a small kerf but they were nesting parts within parts, within parts.  I've been asking for the ability to nest a part within a cutout for over a decade.  Am I alone in thinking that optimization could be a little better?
Just a question
