Product Image Sizing

We have a bunch of unique products and I would like to start images to them when you pick that product.

However, I noticed my images may just be a tad high in quality and it has that slight "lag" when you click it, however the default products don't really have that lag.

What is the recommend resolution/size of an image to be used by a product?
