Small Scale Prototyping

I've been thinking about getting a desktop laser cutter to make small scale prototypes of things like reception desks and other custom products.

Has anyone tried this? What machine(s) have you used? Any success stories, major hurdles or suggestions welcome. What did you do for hardware (3D printed mini hinges?)
