For a quick background of myself: I came from a cabinet shop in South Texas, where I started out on the shop floor assembling cabinets. In 2008, I moved up in the drafting/engineering department and eventually became the manager of the department. In 2017, I became a member of the Microvellum User Advisory Board, where I served as the Program Director until late 2018. In 2019, I decided to take the leap and become a Service Provider for Microvellum - I did this up until March of 2020 and then switched fields entirely (x-ray service technician). I joined back on board with Microvellum in October 2020.
The reason I ask this question to the community is because I recently asked myself the same question. I came up with many reasons.
First, as a Microvellum user for many years, I LOVED the fact that I could make this software build and draw EXACTLY how I wanted. From building custom products and subassemblies, modifying drawing tokens, adding custom associative hardware, all the way through extensive formula-driven spec groups. All of what I was able to do with the software really grabbed a hold of the nerd in me.
As a Service Provider (round one), I wanted to help other companies and users learn the software - especially to the extent in which I learned. A little note, I knew how to draw lines and shapes in AutoCAD and knew how to use AUTOSUM in Excel - that was the extent of my knowledge when I started.
Round two is what really got me asking the question: Why did I choose Microvellum? The most simple answer... I missed it. Not only did I miss the woodworking industry, but I missed the excitement of learning and manipulating the software to build and draw as I wanted. The nerd in me was screaming to be let loose again! I also missed the interaction with the Microvellum Team and all the users I've come to know. I guess when you get down to it, I'm just a loyal "Microvellumist."
So, I pose the same question to you. Why did you choose Microvellum? I'd love to see the responses, and I'm sure others who have jumped on board the M-Train would appreciate reading why you made the decision, too.
