Understanding Auto-Sizing Properties in Report Designer

The articles in this section of the Knowledge Base involve the different automatic resizing properties available in the Report Designer. To access the Report Designer, select Toolbox Setup > Design Reports > Design (Report Type) Report. Select New Report to design a report from scratch or New Report from Existing. Select Designer to open the Report Designer.

The auto-size properties can be found in most components. This article uses Image components to demonstrate the properties.

Can Grow Property

If the Can Grow property is set to true, the component can automatically increase its size if the information or image contained within it does not fit in the available space. If it is set to false, the information or image is cropped to the component size. See Figure 01.

Can Shrink Property

If the Can Shrink property is set to true, the component can automatically reduce its size to fit the size of the information or image being displayed. If it is set to false, the component remains the same size leaving unused space around the information it contains. See Figure 02.

Report Designer allows you to set both Can Shrink and Can Grow properties simultaneously. If you set both properties to true, the component automatically increases or decreases in size where appropriate. The example below shows an image component that is not large enough to support the height of the image but is too wide for the image width. It needs to grow vertically and shrink horizontally. By setting both the Can Shrink and Can Grow properties to true, the size of the component changes automatically to match the size of the image.
