Understanding Pages in the Report Designer

The articles in this section of the Knowledge Base involve working with Pages in your reports. To access the Report Designer, select Toolbox Setup > Design Reports > Design (Report Type) Report. Select New Report to design a report from scratch or New Report from Existing. Select Designer to open Report Designer.

A page in Report Designer is not only the primary component, but it is also the designer workspace. A Page acts as a container in the report template, so other components of the Report Designer can be put in it. A Page cannot be placed into any other component.

The report template’s pages are printed in sequence. Page one of the template is rendered first, then the second, and so on. The processing order of pages is located in the Report Tree tab. The higher the page appears in the tree, the higher its priority to be processed. When there are copies of pages, the first page of the template is processed and printed, and then the copies follow.

The report template page construction begins on a new page in the rendered report. As an example, the first page of the report template was deployed on 14 and a half pages. In this case, the construction of the second page of the report template begins with the 15 th page in the rendered report.

Fig. 01 – Demonstrating Free Space Left Over

As can be seen in Figure 01, after the data from the first page of the template is processed, there is too much free space in the output page. The reports template’s second page was printed on the new page. For the data from the second page of the report template to be printed immediately after the list of the first page of the template, you should set the Print on Previous Page property of the second page of the template to true.

By default, the Print on Previous Page property is set to false.

Margins

A page can be edited in the report template to be maximally filled, but part of this information is cut off when you physically print the report. To avoid this happening, set the report margins. Margins are intended to divide the print area and the remaining space around the edges of the page, which are called fields.

Fig. 04 – Margins and Print Area Example

In the actual printed report, borders are not displayed. The page consists of the margins and print area.

It is possible to place elements on margins within the report template. As an example, the text component with the function to output the page number. The size of the fields can be modified with a custom value, or by selecting one of the preset fields. Preset options for the fields can be selected on the Page tab > Margins menu. Custom fields are defined by using the Margins report property.

Fig. 05 – Margin Property

Units of fields correspond to units of the report (hundredths of inches, inches, millimeters, centimeters).

If you are creating a report with the intention of stapling it together as a booklet, you’re going to require a broader field on one of the page sides.

Fig. 06 – Booklet Report

As seen in Figure 06, the left margin of the right page is wider than the right margin, and the right margin of the left page is wider than the left margin. The example demonstrated in Figure 06 is called a mirror arrangement of margins. To activate the mirror margins, you should set the Mirror Margins property to true.

Fig. 07 – Mirror Margins Property

If the margins have the same values (right margin is equal to the left), their mirrored margins are the same.

As previously stated, predefined fields can be modified on the Page tab > Margins menu.

Fig. 08 – Margins Menu

The setting of custom fields is carried out on the property panel. Depending on the type of the interface, there can be on a single Margins property. In this case, the values of the properties will be four numeric values from zero or more, through the “;” separator.

Fig. 09 – Margin Property Break-Down

The minimum size of margins depend on the printer used, the printer driver and the paper size. For information about the minimum size of the margins, see the user manual of your printer.
