Adding a Header to a Table in Report Designer

The articles in this section of the Knowledge Base involve working with Lists for display in your reports. To learn more about Lists and how to access the Report Designer, see Creating Lists in Report Designer. This article provides information on adding a Header band to a list.

To print a list, add a Data band to the template page, and assign a Data Source to the band. Insert Text components on the band with references to data fields for each text component.

Tables need column headers for readers to be able to identify what they are looking at effectively. To create these column headers in your reports, use the Header band. Place the Header band on the page directly above the Data band.

There should not be any headers between the Data band and the Header band. In Figure 01, a sample of a report template with one Data band and one Header band.

Fig. 01 – Header and Data Band in the Report Template

Create a new report, insert a Data band on the page, and add the Header band above the Data band. Insert Text components inside of this Header band, and enter the names of the data columns you’ve referenced in the Data band. Format these column names however you’d like.

Rendering a report generates something like the report that appears in Figure 02.

Fig. 02 – Rendered Report with Data Band AND Header Band

When rendering with one Data band, it is possible to create more than one Header band. As an example, one Header band can be output only at the beginning of the data. The second Header band can be output at the beginning of the data and on other pages of a report.

Header bands are output in the same order as they are placed on a page. For one Data band, an unlimited number of Header bands can be created.
