Some of our Users benefit from setting up virtual servers. It is possible to set up multiple virtual servers on a single physical server. Each virtual server may be set up with a separate operating system and software. Some blogs have described this as a picture-in-picture. In other words, you may run a virtual copy of Windows on a physical computer that is already running Windows. Or, you may run a virtual copy of Windows on a physical computer that is running Mac OSX.
1.) Data Center/Central Hub (Base Setup)
Operating System:
- Windows Server 2008
- Windows Server 2008 R2
- Windows Server 2012 R2
- Server 2016
Software:
- SQL Server 2012
- SQL Server 2014
- SQL Server 2016
Memory: 16GB minimum (24+ recommended)
SAS or SSD drive with 10,000 write speed or higher (Raid 10 hard
drive configuration recommended)
Disk Space: 50+ GB recommended
Network Card: Intel X550 Dual Port 10G Base-T Adapter, Full Height
2.) Virtualization (Base Setup)
- VMware: VMware Horizon 7
- Graphics Card: Nvidia Tesla M10 (Must be GRID compliant)
3.) Virtual Machines
Multiply the requirements below by the number of estimated Virtual Machines and add that number to the requirements above.
- Memory: 16 GB minimum (more recommended)
- Disk Space: 120 GB
These are only basic recommendations for hardware and software. You may need to adjust these recommendations based on your specific needs. One example of this is how much SQL data you need to store. We recommend that you do not install SQL on your domain controller as the security and performance may be degraded. It is best to install on a physical PC instead of a virtual server. To prevent your virtual server from running too slow, you must ensure that your network speed is sufficient. This includes network speed on the server and client. If Users are utilizing remote desktop connections to the system from outside the network, the internet connection must be fast.
This is a very basic specification, and there are many other components of the server that you need to examine to ensure it will work for your specific needs and configuration. This includes licenses, power supplies, etc.
We recommend that you contact an IT professional in your area for more information as it requires a significant amount of set up and management.
Example Live Setup (running 10 Virtual Machines):
