Understanding the Keep Details Property in the Report Designer

The articles in this section of the Knowledge Base involve working with Master-Detail lists for display in reports. To learn more about Master-Detail Reports and how to access the Report Designer, see Creating a Master-Detail Report in Report Designer. This article provides an overview of the Keep Details property.

Sometimes the Details section of a Master-Detail report is partially cut off and split up by a page break (Figure 01). When it is necessary to keep the Master and the Detail section together, use the Keep Details property.

Fig. 01 – Details Section Split (Keep Details set to “None”)

The Keep Details property is located in the properties section of the Master band. By default, this property is set to “None.”

Fig. 02 – Keep Details Property

The Keep Details Property has four values:

  1. None – Same as “False.” No special discrimination of data from one page to the next.
  2. Keep First Row Together – When a page break splits the Details section, at least one row always remains with the accompanying row of the Master band.
  3.
Fig. 03 – “Keep First Row Together”

  4. Keep First Detail Together – Used when there is more than one Detail section. Keeps the First Detail band section together.
  5. Keep Details Together – Keeps the entire Details section together on one page when possible.

  6. Fig. 04 – “Keep Details Together”

As can be seen in Figure 04, setting the Keep Details property to “Keep Details Together” forces the Master data row to remain on the same page as the Details section, and this sometimes results in extra space at the end of a page.
